On 25.01.2023 Lennart Guckes and Tobias Homolla successfully defended their PhD theses on following topics under supervision of Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Hermann Winner:

FZD welcomes its latest family member: a battery electric sedan with the first conditionally automated driving system (L3) meeting the legal requirements of the international UN-R157. FZD will use it in research and teaching (e.g. in the Automotive Engineering Tutorial). A first research study is already on its way – more to come, stay tuned!.

On 17.01.2023 Moritz Lippert, Clemens Linnhoff and Felix Glatzki successfully defended their PhD theses on following topics under supervision of Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Hermann Winner:

Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) Lidar combines the advantages of radar and lidar. As thus it is a very promising technology to further enhance sensing for automated driving tasks. FZD currently runs its first tests of this very new technology with an Aeva Aries II sensor.

Topic: “Metrics for Specification, Validation, and Uncertainty Prediction for Credibility in Simulation of Active Perception Sensor Systems”

On 08.11.2022 Philipp Rosenberger, CEO of Persival GmbH (a FZD spinoff), successfully defended his PhD thesis on “Metrics for Specification, Validation, and Uncertainty Prediction for Credibility in Simulation of Active Perception Sensor Systems” under supervision of Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Hermann Winner.

Our head of FZD, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Steven Peters, became member of the German scientific society WKM (Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft für Kraftfahrzeug- und Motorentechnik e.V.).

On 19.10.2022, the results of the fifth project of the interdisciplinary research cooperation PRORETA were presented at the August-Euler Airfield in Griesheim.

Clemens Linnhoff, Philipp Rosenberger, Kai Storms and Cheng Wang presented their research at the VVM Mid-Term Event.

Christoph Popp, Björn Klamann, Moritz Lippert and Felix Glatzki presented their research at the Uni-DAS Workshop Fahrerassistenz und automatisiertes Fahren.

On May, 3rd 2022 our new head of FZD, Professor Dr.-Ing. Steven Peters, presented his inaugural lecture at Campus Lichtwiese to a broad audience of more than 100 colleagues, partners and friends of FZD who joined in person or via livestream.

Steven Peters is our new Professor in Automotive Engineering at the Department of Mechanical Engineering since April 1st.

On February 1, 2022, the project “TarA” (short for Test Effort Reduction AEB) started at FZD in the context of a cooperation with a tier one supplier.

FZD published OpenSimulationInterface (OSI) compatible radar and lidar system models.

The Last Lecture

After 20 years leading the Institute of Automotive Engineering Darmstadt (FZD), Prof. Dr. rer. nat Hermann Winner bids farewell and steps on to take his well-deserved retirement.

Since 2010 there has been a lively student exchange program between the FZD and the School of Automotive Studies at Tongji University Shanghai.
