Autonomous Emergency Braking Systems for Motorcycles
The project which is supported by the Federal Highway Research Institute (German: Bundestanstalt für Straßenwesen, BASt), deals with the potential use of autonomous emergency braking systems (AEB) in one-track vehicles. It is expected that many parts from passenger cars can be adopted for the technical realization of AEB systems in motorcycles. But even if the technical challenges for the introduction of AEB in motorcycles seems to be low due to the availability of these components, one critical aspect compared to the systems from passenger cars remains: The rider of the motorcycle himself must be considered as a (de-)stabilizing element of the riding dynamics and furthermore he is not tightly coupled with the vehicle, like the driver of a passenger car with its restraint systems. Accordingly, a separate investigation must show to which degree AEB systems can be used in the motorcycle sector and which potential it has for accident mitigation.
Within the scope of the project, an extensive participant studies are planned that are supposed to define the dynamic limits for a largely safe application of emergency braking systems in motorcycles. Using GIDAS accident data provided by BASt, the potential for accident avoidance or mitigation will be estimated.
While only scenarios of uninfluenced straight riding are planned for the participant studies, simulator tests at the Würzburg Institute for Traffic Sciences (WIVW) will show more critical scenarios like one-handed and freehand riding in order to investigate their influence on the applicability of AEB systems in motorcycles.
