Applications for Motorcycle Simulators
The project „Applications for Motorcycle Simulators“, commissioned by the Federal Highway Research Institute (German: Bundesanstalt für Straßenwesen, BASt), is managed by the Center for Traffic Sciences in Würzburg (German: Würzburger Institut für Verkehrswissenschaften, WIVW) and supported by FZD as a subcontractor.
Years of experience in the passenger car sector show that riding simulators can significantly contribute to research and development. This potential for an increase of safety in traffic must also be shown for motorcycle simulators.
While passenger vehicle riding simulators are widely spread regarding numbers and extension levels, motorcycle riding simulators – especially those with a complex technical structure for research and development questions – have been built up in only very few research facilities. Scientific studies about the applicability of the gained results are almost non-existent. Furthermore, it is not determined whether, and if yes, which extension levels of motorcycle simulation are sufficient or necessary in order to answer the specific questions.
The goal of this project is to gain a comprehensive overview of the topic of motorcycle riding simulation, to develop a validation methodology for different applications, as well as to provide evidence for the question of validity in expert and individual surveys.
