Test Vehicle Project

Project Description

The Institute of Automotive Engineering conducts subjective assessments of production vehicles from different manufacturers and importers within the framework of the test vehicle project. The project provides our employees with access to the latest vehicles. This is essential for both research and teaching as regards the knowledge about the state of the art. The education of the students is based on the experiences the teachers have had in dealing with new vehicles and systems. In addition to this, the project provides feedback on the implementation of ongoing research in products. The project also facilitates the assessment of further potential in vehicle development. Reports prepared by the staff develop their abilities to discuss subjective impressions in an objective manner and necessitate the definition of evaluation criteria. Last but not least the test vehicle project offers excellent practical training to young automotive engineers.

We offer our partners, who make their vehicles available to us, a technically competent discussion of our impressions in the form of a detailed subjective assessment report as a market oriented study. The partners profit from our autonomy as an academic institute possessing a good knowledge of the competitors. Constructive criticism lies at the heart of each of the reports.

History

With these objectives in mind, the test vehicle project was launched/started in 1987 and we, thus, look back on a long tradition. Since then, we have worked together with about 32 manufacturers and importers. The total number of test vehicle evaluated had risen to 445 by the end of the year 2012. The total number of test motorcycles, which were formally assigned to the project only in 1994/95, amounts to 28. This seemingly low number is deceptive since in more than 30 years of active motorcycle research, countless motorcycles were thoroughly examined within the scope of several research projects. These motorcycles are, however, not included in the statistics related ot the test vehicle project.

In the past 12 months seven cars from various manufacturers and importers were driven under normal everyday conditions over a period of two to four weeks covering a total distance of 11,000 km and evaluated subjectively. The driving team for the test vehicles included 14 staff members from the department (Prof. Dr. rer. nat., Dr.-Ing., Dipl.-Ing., Dipl.-Wirtsch.-Ing. und M.Sc.). The driving team for the motorcycle comprised besides four staff members from the department eight other motorcycle enthusiasts, including students and technicians, associated with the department. The value at new condition of the vehicle amounted to over € 190,000.

Experimental Design

The evaluation takes place in everyday driving conditions exclusively on public roads. The driving team travels 836 to 2,753 km with the test vehicles during the trial phase. The assessment report prepared by us includes a critical discussion of the positive and negative impressions from a vehicle-related perspective. Moreover, the free/independent description of the test drivers is also taken into consideration.
